I’m not sure when the Word of the Year started exactly but I know it hasn’t been a thing my whole life. If it was I was completely unaware of it.
I’m one of those people who doesn’t like to do something just because everyone else does. In fact, my rebellious spirit usually wants to reject the thing everyone else is doing.
So each year when we start thinking about a new year, a new you, a new word, I won’t lie, I cringe a little. Here’s what I’ve come to realize helps me in this area and so many others. Take what works for you and leave the rest (unless of course, it’s scripture. I don’t get to pick and choose there.). I am free to do the thing that will bring greater thriving and joy to my life. If I really feel like a word of the year or thought of the year is what I need then I embrace it. If it’s not, then I don’t. I can walk away from the pressure to go with the crowd and leave the shoulds behind.
So whether you pick a word of the year or not I know that you can still walk through your year with purpose and along the way God can still speak to you. He doesn’t just give us one word. He speaks millions of words of life over us through others, books, music, Scripture and our experiences that can and will shape us if we allow. One word or a million, you can thrive without picking just one.
