As I (Jody) get ready for the day I usually have my phone next to me playing a podcast that helps me grow in some way. I’m always listening to others who are helping shape me to be a better leader, mom, Jesus follower, and have better mindset. That’s my daily routine. I also do this while working out, cooking, or doing housework most of the time.
But today as I was putting on my makeup, pondering my conversation with my husband about life and work I realized I didn’t have my podcasts playing and was tempted to go get my phone. Whether in a state of efficiency or laziness of not wanting to leave the room to go get it, I was actually struck with this thought, “You’re always listening to other voices, but are you listening to your own?”
Granted I have plenty of head trash that I don’t need to listen to, which is why I love the help of others with my mindset BUT I also can get so caught up in listening to other voices, that I don’t listen to my own. If I don’t turn it off and have silence once in the while I may not be able to hear what God Himself is trying to say to me or what my own life is trying to speak to me.
We have a wealth of knowledge and voices at our fingertips from so many platforms. But today I was reminded through that disruption of my routine that it’s okay to turn off all the other voices so you can hear your own self think.
Do you struggle to do this? Do you need to take an hour to set down the book or turn off the podcast so that you can hear yourself think?
I encourage you to do this today. You may just be surprised by what you hear.
